The February, 2006, $86,000,000 bond issue, approved by University Place voters is allowing the school district to make a number of additions and improvements over the next five years. Local bond money, coupled with state construction matching funds total approximately $110,000,000 in expected revenue over the construction period.
The project list was compiled and prioritized by the school board appointed Citizens Facility Advisory Committee. Final approval was given to the projects by the University Place Board of Directors. A complete list of the projects can be found in the Capital Projects Timeline on this web site.
Construction Update:
University Place Primary School:
The new University Place Primery School construction project is progressing
on schedule and within budget under the general contractor, Babbitt-Neuman Construction
Company. The building is "dried in" and painting of the interior is
currently ongoing. Roofing is completed and the exterior siding is about 75%
complete.
Site work around the building will continue into late April. Curbs, sidewalks,lighting
and development of parking and road acess is scheduled to be completed in late
spring.
The new school and surrounding amenities is scheduled for completion in early
July. Once that phase is accomplished, the contractor will immediately begin
removing the original school and work on the playfields.
Bids for the new Curtis Junior High School were opended on February 21, 2008.
Berschauer-Phillips, Olympia was the responsive low bidder for the 138,000 square
foot building and site improvements. The base bid plus chosen alternate bid
items totalled $41,808,913.
The Board of Directors approved the bid submittal at their February 27 meeting.
Construction is scheduled to begin mid-March and will continue through October,
2009.
The new Curtis junior High School will be built on the site of the high school
baseball field off of Grandview Drive. Once the new school is completed, (July,2009)
Curtis Junior High School will be taken down and work will immediately begin
to develop new fields

At the opening of the 2007-08 school year, the construction projects scheduled for Sunset Primary School are about 95% complete. Roofers will be finishing the new roof and roof flashing after school hours. We expect final completion about October 1.
During spring and summer, the following has been completed:
All plumbing has been cleaned out and lined with a vinyl coating product. Faucets and valves found to be in disrepair have been replaced throughout the building.
The old oil furnace has been taken out. The new system consists of a series of rooftop heating, cooling and ventilating units throughout the school. Each classroom is individually controlled. Air conditioning is provided throughout the building with the exception of the gym/commons area. As a part of the heating/cooling renovation, new ceiling tiles have been placed in the halls and selected classroom areas.
Single pane windows have been replaced with energy efficient double pane windows throughout the school. New blinds have been added.
The gymnasium/commons received new tile and the kitchen floor tiles have been replaced with a non-slip linoleum designed for commercial kitchens.
The Sunset roof is being replaced with a new 40 year roofing product. Additional insulation has been added to the roof to increase energy efficiency.
Sunset Primary School will also receive the addition of a fire suppression system (sprinklers) throughout the building. This project is scheduled to be bid in February, 2008 and installation is scheduled for the summer of 2008.
The inoperable 60 ton chiller designed to provide cooling to the 100 and 300 buildings and the auditorium has been replaced with a new 120 ton chiller and new control valves at the multi zone units.
At the "old" 400 building, the second floor received new air to air heat pumps designed to heat and cool all classrooms. On the lower floor, a new 100% outdoor air VAV air handler will control heating and cooling to all lower 400 building classrooms. Heating and cooling controls have been replaced throughout the 400 building.
All science classroom fume hoods have been brought up to standard including the addition of explosion proof lighting.
Metal halide lamps lighting the cafeteria have been replaced with new, energy saving high bay fixtures and occupancy sensors.
The building 400 roof is being replaced. The 1.5" insulation is being increased to 2.5" to provide for energy savings.
Two additional roofing jobs are on the schedule this summer. Narrows View Intermediate School will receive a replacement roof and repairs will be made to the Evergreen roof as needed.
During the 2007-08 school year plans and bid documents will be prepared for work scheduled for the summer of 2008. These projects include roofing replacement at Chambers Primary School and the 100 and 200 building at Curtis High School. Bid documents will be prepare for a spring bid to add fire suppression systems (sprinklers throughout the building) to Chambers Primary School and Sunset Primary School to be completed during the summer of 2008.
Planning will begin on the replacement of the Curtis High School gym and improvements to the Curtis Theater. These projects are scheduled for the 2009-10 school year.
