President Rick Maloney called the meeting to order at 11:04 am at Curtis High School.
David Lipe, Curtis High School teacher, introduced the Board members to the CHS seniors who
attended the meeting.
"The Board wants to hear student's perceptions of how well they think they are prepared for
the next step in their lives. You are the reason that we're doing the work we do," said
Superintendent Patti Banks.
Rick Maloney told the students that the goal of the UPSD Board and the district is to produce
"competent, contributing citizens." He asked them if they thought their education had prepared
them to meet that goal.
Discussion was wide-ranging, providing student perspectives on such issues as differences in
AP and regular classes; feeling unprepared for college, especially in writing and math; liking
hands-on classes and the variety of classes available; the 90 minute class length; learning how
to manipulate the system; discrepancy between the grade you get and the knowledge obtained in
class; possibility of a SAT prep class; and the amazing opportunities available in performing
arts. Other topics included getting out of an education what is put into it, teachers' obligation to
challenge their students, students' obligation to take charge of their educational opportunities.

The meeting adjourned at 12:33 pm.
