Community Linkage

At 7:15 pm the regular portion of the meeting was adjourned for a community linkage meeting on the subject of
Health and Fitness.

PTSA officers, health teachers, and physical education teachers were invited to the linkage meeting. Rick Maloney
explained that the Board's role was to listen to the community members and staff to hear their values in the area of
health and fitness.

Ruth Russell, executive director of business services, discussed the bill that was passed in 2004 which affects all
food that is available to students in the school. This includes items from the DECCA store, pop machines, fund
raisers, and food service. She reviewed the proposed nutritional policy and procedure.

In the area of competitive food sales - total fat content must be less than or equal to 35% of total calories per
serving; saturated fat content must be less than or equal to 10% of total calories preserving; and sugar content must
be less than or equal to 15 grams per serving (not including fresh, dried or frozen fruits and vegetables).

Portion guidelines where shown for the primary/intermediate level and the secondary level. Beverage sales would
be limited to beverages containing less than or equal to 15 grams of added sugar per serving. This means that no
soda pop would be sold in school.

Questions were asked regarding students bring soda pop from home, coffee drinks at CHS, French fries, sports
drinks, and pizza. Linkage meeting attendees agreed that information on the nutritional guidelines needs to be
communicated to the district's students and their parents.

Patti Banks talked about the compliance issues with the PE instruction requirement. Our primary schools are not
incompliance with the requirements. All students in grades one through eight are required to complete an average of
100 instructional minutes per week requirement of physical education. Some of the issues with meeting the
requirement involve PE staffing, gym space, and the impact on academic instructional time. Participants
commented on the need to change family habits, that parents are part of the problem, primary teachers could take
students outside during the day, the need to balance the whole child. Bob Lucey said many students have lots of
activity after school - more now than years ago.

Rick Maloney thanked all the participants for their interest and comments. At 8:38 pm the regular portion of the
meeting was reconvened.
