A Strategic Plan for Excellence in Education

Quality for the 21st Century

 

Belief Statements

This plan is based on a set of beliefs that speaks to the question of who we are as a school community. The belief statements below reflect our values, character and philosophy.

  • Education is essential to a quality of life.
  • Public education is essential to the successful functioning of a democracy.
  • A shared set of basic values and ethical standards is essential to a community.
  • Trust is fundamental to a quality relationship.
  • A diverse population enriches a community.
  • The success of every individual is dependent upon meeting the challenges and opportunities brought about by change.
  • Every individual can learn.
  • Every individual has value.
  • Every individual has the right to have the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, and safety met.
  • Every individual has a responsibility to others.
  • Every individual is responsible for his or her decisions and behavior.
  • Every individual has the right and the responsibility to reach for his or her potential.

Parameters

 

  • All decisions will be consistent with the district‚s mission, beliefs, and goals.
  • All decisions will be based on formal and/or informal research.
  • All decisions will be based on a cost-benefit analysis.
  • All new programs will include provisions for staff training.
  • All new employees will be hired based on their ability to commit to the district‚s mission, beliefs, and goals.
  • Discrimination will not be tolerated in any form.

Our Mission

The mission of the University Place School District, in partnership with our community, is to develop competent, contributing citizens.

Goals

1. All of our students will meet or exceed district learning outcomes. (competence)

2. All of our students will be treated and will treat others with dignity and respect. (citizenship)

3. All of our graduates will continue to be involved in education, training, or in pursuit of their chosen career within two years of graduation. (contribution)

4. All of our parents and community members will express confidence in University Place Schools. (community)

Environment

We will maintain a safe, inviting, functional, and comfortable environment that supports learning and teaching.

End Results:

  • A replacement/funding schedule is in place dcistrict-wide for all existing and newly purchased maintenance equipment.
  • Modifications as a result of annual energy assessments will result in an increase in building functionality and energy savings.
  • Increase maintenance efficiency by implementing a computer-based maintenance plan, which will result in decreased response time, decreased travel time, more time on task, and improved customer satisfaction.
  • Identify and implement maintenance projects that will both improve appearance and reduce long-term maintenance.
  • Continue to assess all district-wide safety programs to ensure compliance with current standards.
  • Implementation of Facilities Review Committee recommendations on capital projects.

Instruction

Instruction will result in all students being engaged, stimulated, challenged, and successful.

End Results:

  • A K-12 curriculum cycle exists
  • Staff and stakeholders know the curriculum and its sequence
  • The taught curriculum matches the adopted curriculum
  • A plan for a continuum of prevention/intervention strategies and programs for improved student achievement exists.
  • Specific staff development initiative that addresses the Effective Instruction Model

Relationships

We will build relationships based on mutual respect among students, staff, parents, and community.

End Results:

  • The district will have a repertoire of community resources that strengthen the connections between the community, family, and school, leading to student readiness.

  • The district will continue to attract and retain quality staff that reflect and represent the community and intentionally acknowledge staff efforts within the district and the school.

  • The district will have a common culture that promotes safety and civility.

  • The district will create and sustain an environment of respect for all staff, students, parents and families.

  • The district will create a positive school climate that encourages connectedness to staff, students, parents and community.
