especially in math.

If helps if a teacher cares, if students and teachers have good relationships. Teachers
need to let you know they care - then you try harder to please them. (Student gave
example of teacher coming to the student after a test and asking if the student needed
help.)

Comments:

The district has a no tolerance policy regarding fights. I've seen only two fights in my
whole UPSD career. Students are shown there are other ways to solve problems. Some
schools have fights daily.

Curtis is more unified than other schools.

There are lots of extra curricular activities to keep kids busy. 85% of students are
involved in extra curricular activities - that keeps kids busy doing positive things.

With activities you get to know people you don't usually connect with. You don't have
as many problems because you have a connection with them.

When you look at kids who are in fights - they are usually kids who don't do much -
aren't involved.

(Mary Lu Dickinson asked how to get those students involved.)

Get school spirit - basketball is fun. You can't "make" someone join things. If they can
find something interesting - environmental club, yearbook, football, anything, that will
help. Need to have a variety of clubs.

You could find out what they are interested in - maybe start a new club.

Some that aren't involved are the ones who no one cares about. If they were encouraged
to try - and get a taste of it - it might help.
