Book Report

  • The students each select a favorite, "just right" book that they want to share with the class. The assignment requires the students to reread their book, complete a book report outline, scan the cover of their book, and create a final document in AppleWorks that includes the picture of the cover and the information from their book report. After printing their page, the students share with the class and display the reports in our classroom library to remind students of the book recommendations from their peers. I like to show students actual book reviews from the newspaper and make the connection between this assignment and real-world reading and writing.

Author Study

  • This assignment was completed in conjunction with "Read Across America" and Dr. Seuss' Birthday. Using a list of Dr. Seuss books with reading levels, I assigned each student a book. Each student was assigned a book, even my ELL and SPED students. The assignment required students to read through the book 1-3 times, this could be independent or with a partner. Each student completed one PowerPoint slide on their book (This could also be completed in AppleWorks if PowerPoint is unavailable.). The slide included the title, a summary statement, a scanned image from the book, and a student voice recording of an exerpt from the book. After each student completed their page, I compiled them into one slideshow document. We invited another class to come to our room for the sharing of our presentation on "Read Across America" day. These are PowerPoint documents: if you don't have PowerPoint, you can download the viewer for free Windows Version, Mac Version
