Beginning Study Skills
Second Grade

Good Planning:

Coming to school: Folder in backpack
Coat near backpack
Sturdy Shoes (on PE days)
Lunch money in envelope
Library Book (return each library day)
Rested children learn better
(8 pm is an average time)

Consistency:

Each day the folder/backpack goes to school. Each afternoon the folder/backpack goes home with the days work or notes for the parent to see.

Responsibility:

Give your child one place to put their folder/backpack/coat each day. Make it a consistent place. Their responsibility ends in putting it in the correct spot. Please take the responsibility for cleaning out your child’s folder and returning it to the backpack.

• Students should be listening to you read to them at least 10 minutes per day. They should try reading to you or independently 15 minutes per day. Read to your child everyday if possible. Record all reading on a Mustang Minutes form and turn in each week (100 minutes or more each week). Remember, you are their favorite role model!

• Homework will go home each Friday. There are 5 suggested activities, please choose 3 together and complete. Depending on your child's abilities you may expand or simplify the activities. The vocabulary words are from our reading each week and the students should work on reading them (not spelling). All activities relate to what we are doing in the classroom and should not take more than 10-15 minutes each. Remember to be consistent and keep this as a fun opportunity to connect with your child's education.

• Other homework...students may always practice sight words, math problems, or handwriting. If you want to encourage this, give them a place to study, a short amount of time (15 minutes maximum), and only give positive praise for what they work on!

• Help them obtain a library card and visit the children’s section often.

Remember: You are the most important person in you children’s lives! High expectations bring great rewards. Also, positive praise, consistency, and good planning are most important.

Thank you for helping your child get started on beginning study skills. Together we can help your child to succeed!
